This piece of art appears to be a man made out of various upcycled materials, such as soda cans, water bottles, and cardboard. It appears to have a torso of cans, legs of water bottles, arms of cardboard rolls, and a head of just cardboard. The sculpture is decently large, and the face of this man appears to made out of negative space in the cardboard. You could say that this sculpture is both in-the-round and additive, as it has length, width, and depth, can be viewed from all angles, and is made by adding material.
The artist that I used as inspiration for this project was Robert Bradford, an artist who sculpts living things from discarded plastic. I applied this into my artwork by taking inspiration from the concept, of using discarded materials to depict a person. Some elements of designed that I used were form, in how I made this sculpture into the form of a human, and space, in how I created the face of the person by creating negative space in the cardboard. The main idea of this point of art is to send a message about how humans produce so much garbage that we are ruining the environment. That is why this person is made up of all of these used materials, as its kind of representing that we are what we produce. This function does not serve a purpose outside of getting people to think about the environment, so I guess it would be a decorative piece. That is the purpose behind the sculpture, but as I was making it, I was focusing very hard on how I would put it together, because it wasn't easy. I had to think about at which points to attach the materials using hot glue, because the shapes of the materials were very irregular and hard to line up. This caused gluing to take up the majority of my project. I didn't really think that I would like this project, but I think that this piece turned out fine. It looks pretty much how I envisioned it, but I don't think it is really anything special. It just kind of looks a little simple, barely stands up on its own, and is also very fragile. Overall, this was probably the hardest piece I've had to create, just because of how long and hard it took to put it all together. It did make me better at attaching materials and using a hot glue gun, though. |
