This creation was the second work of art that I created in sculpture and ceramics, a 5 inch by 5 inch tile. It has a lot of different types of coils on it that are arranged in a visually appealing, abstract, and interesting way. Some of the coils that are used are spirals, arches, donuts, spheres, folds, and long coils.
This piece is organized in a way so that everything on it can fit onto a 5x5 tile. I kind of used coils to split it into four different sections, with each containing a different type of coil: an arch in the top left, a spiral in the bottom left, a fold in the top right, and a donut with spheres in the bottom right. An element of design that is used here is texture, as it has more smooth parts on the top of the coils contrasted with the rough parts that are on the tile below.
As I was making this artwork, my main goal was just to get five different types of coils onto a slab that looks relatively cool. I made sure that I was not thinking of making anything specific as I was creating this, as it would not have been abstract if something was represented. Once I got the five different coils on the tile, I focused on making in coils to fill in excess space. The function of this piece is entirely decorative.
I find myself liking this piece quite a bit. I really like the way that the coils look when they are put together, as I just think it is visually appealing. The process was also good for learning how to create coils, as I was making coils a lot faster at the end of the project than at the beginning.
